Coming to Know and Follow Jesus

Walking with Jesus

Walking with Jesus Book Cover Walking with Jesus: Member's Guide in the Community of Christ, Jerry Nieft, ed., Herald Publishing House, Independence MO, 2004. ISBN 9780830911059.

This new disciple’s guide has been created for those who have recently embarked on the path of the disciple in the Community of Christ. Of course, those who made their decision to follow Jesus Christ some time ago will also find it a helpful and encouraging resource. Walking with Jesus can be presented at baptism and confirmation, or it can be used for individual devotion or group study. Eleven easy-to-read chapters offer insight to various areas of participation in the Community of Christ. Some of the topics covered include the following—becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ, learning the sacred story, hearing God’s call, living sacramentally, growing in community, generous sharing of witness and resources, serving in the mission of Christ, and basic beliefs of the church.

Reflections on Our Journey Book Cover Reflections on Our Journey: A Study Guide for Walking with Jesus, Jerry Nieft, Herald Publishing House, Independence MO, 2005 ISBN 9780830911677.

Reflections on Our Journey is primarily a study guide, for use both by new members and those who want to explore their faith further. This resource also provides guidelines for mentoring new members. The suggested hymns, meditation exercises, and discussion questions will enhance community building and class-time worship and support belief formation. Reflections on Our Journey can also be used for individual study or in retreat, reunion, youth camp, or family settings. My primary interest in the study guide relates to my conviction that every newly baptized person should be assigned a discipleship mentor to share with them for at least a twelve-month period following their baptism. Both the member’s guide and study guide are outstanding resources to assist our congregations in incorporating this dimension of disciple-ship formation. —Bob Kyser, missionary coordinator, senior president of Seventy
